Snack Review: Bare Fruit Granny Smith Apple Chips

January 25th, 2008 · 7 Comments

I don’t like what many are now calling “health food.” I don’t like pasty, crumbly, sugar-free, fat-free, MUFFIN-free muffins. I don’t like food that is trying to be something it’s not. When it comes to mealtime, you’re not going to find me salivating over a couple sprouts and lettuce, and you certainly won’t find me pounding down a V8 while my friend, soda, sits lonely in the fridge. So, as you might imagine, dried and baked apples aren’t usually my snack of choice.

Then I tried them!

Made by Bare Fruit, these little "chips" are surprisingly delicious. They’re sweet, tangy, and chewy with just a little bit of crisp to them. So far, I’ve only had their Granny Smith Apple Chips, but I’m sold; they’re satisfying, filling, and miracle of miracles, they’re good for you too! Grown in Washington State, these apples are 100% organic and kosher. The apples are cut into very thin slices, and then baked to light golden color. Just one serving (12 grams) did the job. And, something about this fruity snack makes them so filling.

In a world where you can sit down with a bag of potato chips and then get up twenty minutes later, empty bag in hand, with several hundred more calories then you’re happy to admit down the hatch, I’m happy to have found my new, nearly guilt-free friend. Did I mention there’s no fat to worry about? None! One serving has only 7 grams of sugar, and that’s natural sugar from the apples themselves. No high fructose corn syrup, no preservatives, coloring, flavoring, or emulsifiers. And, here’s a revelation for chips, not a drop of oil; no frying, nothing extra added to pack on the calories. (I’m looking at you trail mix!)

If you’re still not convinced, check out the ingredients… one and one item only: ORGANIC APPLES. Finally, a snack that doesn’t have a million unpronounceable ingredients; a snack that is what it says it is, and delivers unto you, me, and all of us, something we can eat on the go, at home, and wherever your snack emergency may strike next.

Here’s The Rundown

  • Serving Size – 12g
  • Calories – 29
  • Carbs – 8g
  • Sugar – 7g

No fat and no cholesterol, but no protein either. Also, no substantial amounts of vitamins or minerals either.

Technicalities aside, they are good, good, good. And as I said earlier, I’m no health-food-loving girl, but this is a true gem. Crispy and soft, tart and sweet with an exciting zing; they are after all, just good old Granny Smith apples! And because they’re actually filling, you’ll find yourself eating fewer of them than you might have thought.

Granny Smith’s not your thing? Bare Fruit makes nine other tasty snack varieties. Cinnamon Apple Chips, Fuji Apple Chips, Dried Pears, Dried Mangos, Dried Cherries, Pineapple and Mangos, Bananas and Cherries, Bananas, and finally, Pineapples. Check them out for yourself at Bare Fruit.

Try ‘em and let me know what you think. Also, if you have any other snack suggestions, leave me a comment below!

Happy Snacking!

These sound great–I’ve had another brand of crunchy apple chips before that are very tasty and I’ve also had my grandparents homemade kind they dry from their own apple tree. They are good to take the place of a potato chip craving. Thanks!

    JRO:
Thanks so much! Looking over this article again definitely makes me hungry-I’m glad it had the same effect on others!

    Anne:
Homemade?! That’s the kind of cooking that’s a total mystery to me-I wish I knew how…those chips sound good.

    Tionna:
Thank you for commenting! Yeah..I have to keep it real about the v8…healthy is good, of course, but old habits… :)

These snacks are uber oishi (delicious in japanese)!
I love granny smiths, nice & tart without the extra sweetness that are found in other apples.
I have to watch my glucose levels so GS apples are the only ones I will eat. 1-2 for the day & I’m good.
If i had a dihydrator, I would make my own but alas this are a wonderful alternative!

Beats anything that is baked or fried!
