Snack Review: KIND Fruit + Nut Bars

February 22nd, 2008 · 5 Comments

As wonderful and enjoying as snacking is, too often it is a cause of stress. Choosing a healthy snack on the fly isn’t always easy, and the stress of finding something pure and delicious can sometimes lead us into the arms of processed junk, fried foods, and refined sugars. Snack bars are convenient because you can buy a couple of them at a time and stash them away in your desk, car, or kitchen cupboard.

I have high expectations for the food I eat, which can sometimes be an inconvenience, but my favorite pre-packaged go-to snack is always there to bail me out of a tough snacking situation.

They’re called KIND Fruit + Nut bars, and they’re delicious bars that come in so many great combinations to suit whatever your fancy may be on any given day. They are made without additives, preservatives, and trans fat. Plus, they’re gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free, and cholesterol-free. They are like creative compact trail mixes, portioned so that you don’t end up eating enough food to fuel a mountain climber for week.

My favorite is their basic Nut Delight, which is made up of:

  • whole peanuts
  • almonds
  • Brazil nuts
  • walnuts
  • honey glucose
  • puffed rice
  • linseed
  • chicory fiber
  • soy lecithin

Because of the nuts, it’s high in omega-3 fatty acids but it’s also a great source of fiber (3 grams) and protein (9 grams). It’s very crunchy and not overwhelmingly sweet.

Their Fruit and Nut Delight still has some crunch from the nuts, but is also chewy because of the fruit. The fruit also gives it a unique flavor because it has more than just your average dried raisin - it has apricots and dates, which also hold the whole nuts together. It has a little more sugar (12 grams) and a little less protein (5 grams) than the Nut Delight, but you also save some calories too.

Almond and Apricot mix is where we get more into a candy-tasting bar than you may have in mind for your average snack, but it certainly is a great replacement for a lot of the candy bars out there. Its flavor is fantastic thanks to the shreds of coconut mixed in with the almonds and apricots. Although it tastes a good deal sweeter than the other two bars I mentioned, it only has 1 more gram of sugar than the Fruit and Nut Delight bar, and it beats both in fiber (5 grams). I like to keep this bar around for when my sweet tooth starts acting up; I may have a couple bites and then wrap it back up for later.

In total, Kind Fruit + Nut bars come in ten different varieties, including some with a little chocolate. They are distributed by Peace Works Inc., a business that donates 5% of all profits to organizations that are working toward peaceful alternatives to war, so you can feel good about the affect your snack choice has on others too.

They can be purchased straight from the Kind Snacks website, or you can visit the store locator on their website to find out where they are sold in your area. I hope you try some of these bars and enjoy them as much as I do.

The KIND Nut Delight bar sounds great; I’ll have to try it. I eat a very similar snack bar called Mojo (Mixed Nuts flavor) by the makers of Clif Bars. http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_mojo/ It contains three different kinds of nuts, plus little pretzel pieces for some added crunch and salt. I also like the Honey Roasted Peanuts Mojo–it’s sweet and salty–yum! I’ll have to try the KIND one now, too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Lauren, thanks for letting me know about Mojo Cliff bars, I didn’t know Cliff made a trail mix type bar. Pretzels are a very creative touch! I’m going to check them out this weekend. It’s important to have diversity so I am looking forward to trying these.

I see they have some more protein than the KIND bars, which is always a plus! But their first ingredient is brown rice syrup. It’s only half as sweet as refined sugar, but I’ve read that it shouldn’t be consumed by diabetics.

Thanks again for the heads up on Mojo!!

    Hey Sarah: )
These sound great! I think the first one you mentioned, the Nut Delight one, would be a favorite of mine, too..and maybe something with chocolate in it!
They sound nice and simple too…no alarmingly long ingredient list; I’m going to keep my eyes open for them in the stores near my house!

Hi Tina, let me know if you try a KIND bar I didn’t mention here - I’d be interested to know what you thought about it.

I LOVE the KIND Date and Walnut bars– low cal, full of good fats, and packed with yummy dates. Not too sweet, and wholesome too.
